Manufacturing

The Distributed Complexity in the Manufacturing Industry

Manufacturing is a broad subject covering everything from the manufacture of simple products from one raw material such as wood to complex and inextricable from the larger supply chain. The more complex and large the system is, the greater the need for DIDOs. The DIDOs may be basic non-realtime, non-mission critical in nature where simple blockchain types of deployments are adequate or need real-time monitoring and control with mission critical consequences. Sometimes, the manufacturing process is not continuously connected to a network and sometimes either for physical distances or electronic interference.

There are any number of CoIs concerned with Manufacturing, however, most are focused on actual problems associated with the manufacturing of a particular product rather than trying to use DIDOs within those CoIs. Sometimes the CoI are a combination of the manufacturing of a particular class of products within a specific geographic region (i.e, The Greater Pittsburgh Metals Manufacturing Community). However, there are general purpose CoIs such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) which have efforts to leverage blockchain-based technologies with IIoT.

“Manufacturing is expensive and requires a lot of human and material resources. Often testing requires the collection of large amounts of data from sensors. This is particularly true with destructive stress testing (i.e., at what temperature will the product fail or after how many hours of use). It is essential the sensors are configured correctly and are producing the right data before the destructive test is conducted. In other words, the manufactured product and sensors work as intended. This is where virtualized testing can help.”

Smart Factories

Smart factory realization can present distinct challenges, including connection of legacy equipment and simplifying system integration for increased flexibility. Real-time analytics can be sent to the data center, by upload to the cloud and fast connection to the ERP/MES upper layer application system. Effective dynamic preventive maintenance strategies can be generated according to machine operation status in real-time, improving equipment reliability.

Thanks for showing interest!

We know it’s annoying but we’re excited to share our knowledge and want to turn DIDO TE from prototype to full fledged product. To do so, we need to be our hero and show there’s interest.
